Customer Engagement Is not a Good Metric...

I've posted links to the blog of my long-time contact Gerry McGovern, widely recognised as a world authority on how customers use websites, and what they are really looking for when they reach your site.

His latest post hits the spot (as usual!) and chimes perfectly with what I tell my clients when they are asking me to revamp and 'sex-up' their sites.  There are common misconceptions that web surfers go…

No Photo on your Profile? BIG mistake!

I just received an email newsletter from Networking in Berkshire Member John Cassidy, Photographer, and I couldn't agree more with the excellent point he makes... in fact, it matches a blog post I made on NiS two and a half years ago! (check it out here)

Here's John's piece:

We have customers, not users

I met Gerry McGovern a few years ago while working on government websites for the Inland Revenue (as it was then called - stop boo-ing at the back please! :0) and for Business Link.

He's a genial Irish genius, blogging about the total online experience in general, and specialising in helping large organisations all around the world (particularly in the public sector) to create and manage large-scale web projects.

Gerry's blog is one of the few that I follow, and one of the…

A 'graphic' look at the Financial Crisis - amazing!

I've added a great video to the site here, with links to four more, which together provide a fascinating analysis explaining the European and global economic crisis  in laymans terms - well worth a look!

Fond Farewell to the Business Link name and website (next week)

Business Link the organisation was wound up last November with the demise of the RDAs around the UK.  Now the national businesslink.gov.uk website is to be amalgamated with Directgov into a new web presence called GOV.UK.

I have a certain nostalgia for the site having been involved in writing some of the content a few years ago, but that's progress for you!

Here's some…

Surrey to be UK's best-connected county with £33m deal

BT and Surrey County Council have struck up a deal worth £33 million that will provide the whole county with superfast broadband.

As a direct result, Surrey's economy could also be boosted by as much as £28 million per annum, according to World Bank research.

While Ofcom's 2012 broadband performance report identifies 9Mbps as the UK's average broadband rate, the high-speed network to be…

Networking in Surrey News – week beginning 6 August 2012

Exciting times! Two more gold medals Team GB this afternoon in the dressage and the boxing (not that I'm glued to the box watching the Olympics you understand :0) I promise I was out networking this morning, although my voice is a bit hoarse from shouting at the telly!

Shock news of the week in Networkland for me was the announcement that Ecademy…

Networking in Surrey News – week beginning 30 July 2012

Well, I loved it... that wacky Games Opening Ceremony, complete with clips from 1960s black & white sitcoms, Mr Bean in Chariots of Fire, the ‘Baked Bean’ parachuting in with James Bond, and a good old singalong finale around the piano with Macca and Hey Jude... and millions around the globe scratching their heads and asking, ‘What’s all that about then?’ A triumph, in true British style - if you can’t beat…

Networking Lessons from a Greek Bar Owner...

Here's a salutory tale about the super smart networker I came across last week, as my long-suffering partner Angela and I were on our way to our current favourite Greek island of Skopelos (where they filmed Mamma Mia).

We were in transit on Skiathos, where the plane lands, with a couple of hours to kill before catching the Skopelos Ferry. So, we settled outside a…
