"There’s a very important principle at the heart of what I do – and it’s that we all share the same needs. When I say ‘needs’ I’m talking about things like autonomy, safety, appreciation,  consideration, support, fun, self-expression – all things that energise us and bring us to life.

Where we differ – and where conflict arises – is in how we try to meet our needs.

To take a simple example, imagine a couple who are wanting some fun, companionship and relaxation. They get into a heated argument because one wants to spend the evening in the pub whilst the other wants an evening at home, watching a DVD. Same needs – but very different strategies for meeting the needs. And the surest way to keep an argument going is to keep it at the level of strategies. As soon as you start expressing the needs behind your strategies, you’re on the way to a resolution."
