Networking in Surrey

It occurred to me yesterday that although networking seems an obvious thing for me to do when running a business we don’t all think like that.

I certainly didn’t. I remember being thrust into a BNI meeting, having no understanding of how it works, no networking etiquette and leaving feeling completely bewildered but compelled to go again and immerse myself into the world of ‘networking’.

It soon became apparent that we all network for a variety of reasons. For some it is gaining new business / business leads, other it’s the interaction, support, learning, knowledge, increasing self-esteem, checking that your business is on the right path.

There are also a variety of groups which exist. Each one has a unique feel to it and will fulfil what it is you are looking for. Some have stricter rules and regulations, others are more informal and this reflects us a humans. We are all different and therefore different groups will suit different people.

What I have learnt is that it should be an integral part of your business and be included in your marketing plan. It shouldn’t be on the outside; seen as a luxury but as a necessity, like keeping your accounts up to date, doing your tax return etc, networking should be a priority especially for SMEs.

For the cost of joining a networking group what you can, if you go about it in the right way reap back from it is un-measureable. If you join, have a positive frame of mind, accept that it does take time and effort you will be rewarded.

A few things which might help in choosing the right group for you; does the group share your beliefs, attitudes, values, do you feel comfortable, can you see the potential in the room? Most importantly go with your gut- does it feel right?

It took me a while to understand this and I think it’s worth sharing.

Good post Sarah - apart from mentioning the dreaded accounts, that is! Just got off the phone from my accountant... ah well, it's only money :0)

You're so right - there's a whole lot more to networking than referrals, but they are an important part.  If you go into a networking event expecting to come out of it with a new customer or two, you're going to be disappointed.  It's like fishing - running into the water grabbing at every passing fish won't work. Patience, well prepared bait and judicious casting are the order of the day!

Great words Keith- brilliant and true. I like to think referrals will come with time, you have to build up trust, respect and build solid foundations of a relationship first.

See you soon.
