Guest speaker. Katy Dowding, Managing Director of Facilities Services, Skanska

Skanska is one of the world’s leading project development and construction groups. The UK operation is one of the country’s top 10 contractors with 4,000 employees in the UK.

Skanska is famous for building iconic structures like 30 St Mary’s Axe (the Gherkin), Heron Tower, and the QEII Bridge. A recent project highlight is the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the UK’s biggest hospital project, the £1 billion redevelopment of St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London hospitals.

Just as important are its extensive service-based contracts: upgrading London’s aging gas infrastructure, a wealth of facilities maintenance contracts, long-term street lighting projects, and landscaping for the London 2012 Olympic Park in Stratford.

By combining their skills and experience in construction, facilities management and infrastructure development, Skanska has become a UK leader in delivering projects in healthcare, education, defence, transportation and municipal services, delivered through both private and public investment.

About the speaker Katy cemented her industry leading role when she became Managing Director for Skanska’s Facilities Services business in 2012. Working for Skanska for 10 years Katy has worked in a variety of roles covering operations, business improvement and commercial disciplines for a number of divisions within the company.

In her current role Katy is responsible for several business functions including strategic planning, sales, bidding, business improvement and asset management. 

A big advocate for women in construction, Katy was voted into the role of chair for the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), a position she has held for six years. Her advice to young women considering a career in construction: “Be yourself, develop your skills and be prepared to take opportunities when they come along. Women can sometimes be too cautious, so be brave and take the step.”

The Venue. The iconic Guildhall was built over the 16th and 17th century and is of great historic interest. It was formerly a courtroom and Council Chamber. Today the building houses the Civic plate and many rare items. All catering and drinks are included in the price
