It is no secret that work is changing, since the advent of the internet and advances in portable technology, work is becoming more flexible, more portable and more nomadic.
This nomadic portable lifestyle of work is not just for the young and upwardly mobile of today, it is permeating into the fabric of society. The days of the worker being employed for a lifetime in the same job, rising from postman to CEO is no longer the case, with the nomadic lifestyle, work is becoming more fragmented, but also less reliable.
Where uncertainty and fragmentation is seen, there can also be opportunity. Digital skills are required to master the new “toolbox” of the digital nomad. The advent of increasingly rapid internet connections and the advent of the cloud have allowed easier transition to a more digital lifestyle, where instant access can be found and rapid availability of documents and systems allow work to be more productive than ever. Now, more than ever, the playing field has been levelled and the power is with each individual to make a difference for themselves.
However, there is a big difference in working in this new frontier, and foregoing the human interaction allowed in modern offices. It is often those ‘water cooler’ moments that lead to co-operation and innovation between people, and this interaction is the grease that oils the gears of business. Hence the rise in the coworking space.
There has been a trend for the so called “coffice” - the coffee office, where local coffee shops are used as office spaces for work, although this is probably a viable alternative to the fledgling business, there comes a time when an environment dedicated to work is required. A coworking space can offer the benefits and freedoms of being a digital nomad, but with the flexibility and benefit of an office with the human interaction and dynamism of an office. Businesses can be run and started and you can network with like minded individuals who have made the leap to a better life.
These centres can provide a new lifeblood into towns and villages and offer the likes of me and you a viable alternative to the rat race.!
