We might be great at our own skill but when we set up in business for the first time we need to be conscious that now we are a business owner as well as a Photographer, Jeweller or Life Coach.
There are two key aspects to focus on. The first would be the customer
experience. The second would be about your processes, how you
actually manage your business. Lets look at the first and I will post more another time.
The key things with customers is to build trust, professionalism and
credibility.
Set aside an hour each day to respond to customer communications. Not
just phone calls and voice mails but also emails.
Contact them when you say you will. An explanation (even if it isn’t good
news) is better than them thinking you are unreliable.
Keep a list of satisfied customers who would be willing to show your
handiwork to new customers. If relevant keep a portfolio of before
and after pictures.
Make sure everything that represents you is professional. Business cards
and good signage are an excellent investment. A website is also a
good investment but make sure you keep it up to date.
When you produce a customer document, use good quality paper and check it
carefully for errors. A spelling mistake or a wrong figure makes a
bad impression.
Agree payment terms with the customer beforehand - stage payments might be
relevant if the work is spread over many months.
When the job is finished pop round and talk to the customer - see it from
their eyes and deal promptly with any snagging issues.
