Office cleaning – points to remember when planning one!

An office is a place where you interact with different people on a day-to-day basis. Clients and co-workers come and go, bringing along with them not just business but also the dirt, dust and grime from the outside environment. It’s easy to spread germs and illness-causing bacteria all over the place because of the building’s shared air ducts. Aside from this, a grimy office is not a good sign of business and might turn off current and future investors!

This is why office sanitation and cleaning should be given priority and proper planning. It’s not enough to leave the cleaner or cleaning crew with the task of sweeping and wiping the office area and expect that everything is as clean as it should be. There should be proper planning and a checklist of things that need to be done. This ensures that all areas are covered and well-kept. Plus, knowing the important points will also help you be more thorough upon checking if the cleaners did the job right.

The first point to remember when planning to clean the office is to pinpoint the areas where the traffic mostly happens. You have to identify which parts of the office where most people converge. These areas are most likely the kitchen, meeting and conference rooms, restrooms as well as the reception area. Once you have identified each area, try to rank it according to:

a. How often it is used
b. How crowded it usually is
c. How often it should be cleaned

This will make it easier for you to assign the level of cleaning your cleaning team should put into each room. For example, the restroom is used pretty often and it breeds bacteria the most, so it should be a top priority to clean.

Next, identify the cleaning methods that you have to employ in order to get a good clean without wasting time and money on products. This will help the cleaners and employees organise the tools that they need to clean a particular area. It will also make sure that they will be performing the task correctly with the proper tools. Create a checklist to help identify what needs to be:

a. Disinfected
b. Vacuumed
c. Scrubbed
d. Thrown out or recycled
e. Wiped and Dusted Down
f. Replaced/re-filled

Once you have these things sorted out, cleaning the office can be done much more efficiently.

Finally, ensure that your cleaning team not only has the proper tools but also the proper equipment like:

a. Cleaner’s trolly and set-up area
b. Barricades and warning signs (i.e. Caution Wet Floor etc…)
c. Safety problems with electrical equipment
d. Chemicals

These things offer protection and safety, not just for the cleaning team but also for all the people milling about in an office.

Of course, it’s important to set up an appointment with professional cleaners to do a thorough spring cleaning of the office at least twice a month. These contractors will be able to scrub, wipe and disinfect more thoroughly than your current cleaning services. Also, you can expect the hard to reach places (like air vents for example) to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
