Networking in Surrey

January often marks the time for new job searches and this is probably more true this year than ever before.

Recruitment procedures have changed with social media and online profiles playing a significant role, computer software managing much of the CV sifting process, and 1st interviews often being conducted by telephone. With hundreds of applications for every vacancy, it’s imperative that your CV makes YOU stand out from the crowd.

Unless you are a school leaver or graduate where one page may suffice, your CV should be cover 2 full sides of A4. It should include a Personal Profile, Objective, Key Skills and Attributes, Experience and Achievements and a selection of key words that will attract the attention of the recruiter or recruitment software.

On the subject of skills and attributes, many of these can become so ingrained that you no longer realise you possess them.  However, the recruiter won’t know what skills you possess unless you tell them, so dig deep and make sure you include even the most obvious.

Employers need to know what you will bring to their business and why they should employ you, so as well as details of your experience, make sure you provide evidence of  achievements, eg “exceeded targets by x% for 3 consecutive years”.

Your CV needs to make an immediate impact, so keep the wording concise, make good use of bullet points and key words, and leave plenty of white space so that it’s easy on the eye.  Don’t underestimate the importance of good presentation, formatting and spelling.

Take care not to undersell yourself, but don’t overdo it either!  If you get the job, you will need to deliver...
