Let's face it, we all try to separate our personal lives from work. In the office, we are expected to conduct ourselves professionally and that includes being respectful of co-workers as well as carrying ourselves with dignity. Most importantly, we should always observe the art of being clean and clutter-free. However, in the real world, there will always be instances where our optimistic and energetic approach to doing tasks is marred by annoying habits caused by our own colleagues, especially if he or she is the office "slob".
Despite the maintenance crews that sweep through the office after hours, keeping the office clean is a responsibility of each and every employee. But with the hustle and bustle of the working day, we tend to overlook the little things and the next thing we know, we are trying to wade through a messy cubicle. Worse, we might be making it difficult for our colleagues as well.
Here are signs that we are becoming the office slob:
Our things travel around the office more frequently than the news
It is normal to borrow stuff from our co-workers, especially if we share a cubicle or we work side by side. However, what is unusual and unprofessional are the instances where everyone on our floor starts seeing our things in almost every nook and cranny. We need to keep our belongings, particularly our junk in check, lest we are engaging the entire floor on a scavenger hunt.
The office fridge or pantry is our own personal jungle
We sometimes forget the fact that the pantry and everything in it is common ground and we share it with everyone else. Unfortunately, our colleagues will never want any of our leftovers living in the fridge for weeks! Let us remember to throw away half-eaten or half-finished food and drinks.
Our cubicle becomes an excavation site
More often than not, we have our co-workers and even our superiors visiting our desks to discuss business. How fun would it be if a single shift of a paper from your desk sends out a tornado of accumulated dust? It may not be as fun as having your boss spot a couple of uneaten popcorn or crisps congregating on one side of your desk while drink bottles or yogurt pots are haphazardly littering your office floor beside an overflowing waste basket.
Nobody wants to work with a disorganised person. Although being a "slob" does not necessarily mean we are dirty, it still connotes that we are a messy person. Being tidy and considerate might slip our minds and not hinder us from performing our day-to-day tasks well, but it will definitely affect our colleagues. So, let us always keep our personal office spaces spic and span by being mindful of our habits and hygiene.
