Do you find you've lost track of what’s in your wardrobe? Got items that you have had for years? Are you almost afraid to sort through as it seems such a big task? Worried you’ll have that horrid feeling of wasting money when you see unworn items with their labels still on? Don’t worry, you’re not alone!
How much could you save buying only items you would wear?
On average, a woman spends £453.60 a year on clothes excluding underwear. However, that is an average and many of us spend much more especially when you include shoes, bags and other accessories. It’s not necessarily through buying expensive, designer items, but lots of cheaper items.
If you were to be brave and investigate your wardrobe what would you find? On average, women wear 20% of their wardrobe. So applying that to the annual spend we are only wearing £90 worth of the £453 spend…in anyone’s terms this is not just a waste of money, but also a waste of good wardrobe space; especially when you think about this being cumulative. There is definitely the thrill that comes with buying something new, but so many women buy new items each year without thinking about the ‘role ‘ they will play in their wardrobe, being sure the items suit them so they look and feel great or without a proper clear out to make room for them. The result is a crammed wardrobe or wardrobes in some cases, full of items that go unworn either as they are hidden, are less favoured than previous times or never made it to being worn. It also means that many items only go with one thing, usually the black trousers or jeans, reducing the item’s flexibility and reducing how much it is worn….
The reasons for owning so many items that don’t get worn are varied – perhaps they looked good in the shop, but each time you go to wear it, somehow it’s just not right. Or, maybe someone advised you to buy it as they thought it looked good on you, but it just doesn't feel like you. One of the favourites is that it was on sale, we are all easily seduced by a bargain especially if it’s a high quality brand with a good discount. Most of us also have items that have been well worn, but not for a long time, perhaps our weight has changed or it’s looking a bit tired. We just don’t have the occasions for it any more, yet we hold onto it due to emotional attachment or just don’t get round to finding it a new home on eBay or at the charity shop.
Is there an answer?
Make the most of the new season and have a spring clean of your wardrobe. You’d be surprised the positive feeling you’ll have as a result of a good clear out. So what better time to face your wardrobe? Click here for my ‘organise your wardrobe article’.
It is possible to create a wardrobe where you buck the ‘only wearing 20% of it trend….’, imagine having a wardrobe where you genuinely enjoyed and felt good about wearing pretty much all that was there on a regular basis… Imagine that you perhaps had fewer items, but you knew how to put them together in different ways to create different looks for different days…In short to feel excited about opening your wardrobe again rather than fearful.
People that know what suits them and manage their wardrobe are able to achieve this. They know that whatever they put on makes them look and feel great and provides them with exciting options every day, without owning masses of clothes. It takes the stress out of shopping too as you know what to rule out in the shop as well as what to rule in!
How much money could you save only buying items that suit you and that you’ll wear?
